Summer Structure
Most parents know that structure is a key piece in helping our kids manage daily tasks. Summer is a great time to review family rules. What rules will change over the summer? Will there be new bedtimes, a change in chores, or curfew extensions? Reviewing these carefully rather than assuming that kids will remember from last year helps bring the whole family up-to-speed and ensures that you’re on the same page.
When kids have clear expectations is can help them prepare and take the wonder out of “what’s next”. This sometimes minimizes anxiety and misunderstandings. Wonder though is one of the joys in life so over-structuring tends to take the fun out of things. Finding a balance for your family is key.
This summer be sure to balance your days between the fun and spontaneous and the simply structured days. When you do, you can better organize the busy days while keeping pockets of wonder where you can make special memories together that are completely unplanned.
From me and my family to yours, have a wonderful, safe, and fun summer.
